working across Telugu, English, and multiple Indian languages. Her work
spans original writing, literary translation, criticism, and independent
publishing, with a sustained engagement with language, reading cultures,
and the circulation of literature in contemporary India.
Writer
Purnima’s writing includes fiction, essays, criticism, and long-form
book reviews in Telugu and English. Her work is shaped by sustained
reading across languages and a close engagement with questions of
gender, society, and literary form.
She is the author of the Telugu short story collection Emotional Pregnancy
and has contributed extensively to literary platforms over the years.
She has written more than two hundred book reviews and essays, playing
an active role in shaping contemporary Telugu literary conversations.
Her writing has appeared on platforms such as BBC Telugu, and she
continues to write across genres that include criticism, reflective essays,
and public-facing literary commentary.
Translator
Translation is central to Purnima’s literary practice. Working primarily between
Telugu and English, and in collaboration with other Indian languages, she approaches
translation as both a literary and political act—one that enables conversations
across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
Her translations into Telugu include Saadat Hasan Manto’s Siya Hashiye and
Amrita Pritam’s Pinjar. Her recent English translations include Volga’s novel
On the Banks of the Pampa, published by HarperCollins, and The Fire of Defiance –
Mallu Swarajyam, the memoir of a leader of the Telangana armed struggle.
Through her translation work, she has contributed to making significant
literary and political texts accessible to wider readerships across languages.

In 2022, Purnima founded Elami Publications, an independent Telugu publishing
house committed to publishing thoughtful, carefully edited literary work. As a
publisher and editor, she is closely involved in shaping manuscripts, working
with authors and translators, and building sustainable publishing practices within
the Indian literary ecosystem.
She is also a co-founder of pustakam.net, a long-running website for book reviews
and literary discussion, established in 2009. The platform has played an important role
in fostering a culture of serious reading, reviewing, and debate in Telugu literary spaces.
Her publishing work reflects a long-term commitment to strengthening Indian literature
and creating spaces for rigorous literary engagement.
A technology professional by training, Purnima currently lives in Bengaluru and continues
to work at the intersection of writing, translation, and independent publishing.
